In the past, Pork as a protein has received a lot of bad press and has been surrounded by misinformation. While some people do not eat pork due to religious observances, a lot of Albertans have forgotten about the beautiful pig, especially being raised in Beef country.
Our Pork Producers
At Cultivatr we are privileged to work with two amazing pork suppliers who provide us with all natural pork products that have been raised humanely with no antibiotics or added hormones. You might have seen a recent switch from Bear and The Flower Farms to Hillview Heritage Pork. One of the unfortunate downsides to raising pigs outside and not using antibiotics, is that you can be subject to outbreaks which can affect your herd. Bear and Flower recently had an outbreak and had to restart their operation. While they are busy with raising the new herd, we are pleased to carry Hillview Heritage Pork products.
Hillview Heritage Pork was established in 1991, occupying farmland around Rosebud, Alberta. All of their pigs are born and raised on the farm and free to roam around in free run pens. Their pigs enjoy a grain and vegetable diet and are processed in their own inspected facility.
Benefits of Eating Pork
All natural pork is a clean protein that is also a good source of vitamins and minerals like phosphorus, selenium, and thiamine. Pork is actually richer in thiamine, a B vitamin required for a range of bodily functions, than other red meats like beef and lamb.
Pork is a good source of:
- Vitamins B6 and B12
Pork is one of the most versatile proteins out there and it is often overlooked. Typically less expensive than chicken (the #1 choice for white meat), pork can be used almost interchangeably with chicken with more cuts to choose from. From fatty pork belly, to lean pork chops, succulent ribs and tasty ground pork and sausages, the wonderful pig provides endless options for your menus.
